Beaune Grèves 1er Cru “Le Clos Blanc” Louis Jadot 2018 (750 ml)
94 poena – James Suckling
94 points – James Suckling
A top premier cru from the Beaune appellation … the Greves vineyard is found on its northern side. “Greves” means sandy, small stones, which describes the soil in which the Chardonnay grapes are cultivated from mostly 70 year-old vines. The grapes are hand-harvested, pressed softly and then fermented in oak barrels – 1/3 of which are new – before aging for 15 months on the lees.
Of all Beaune white wines, this one drinks most like a red in the sense that offers layers of fruit phenolics and complexity. The palate is very well balanced with a fine line of acidity that cuts through the passion fruit, lemon zest and pineapple notes. A dab of lemongrass emerges toward the persistent finish. One of the great triumphs in what was a warm Burgundy vintage.
