Magari, Ca'Marcanda (Gaja) 2022 (750 ml)
95 poena – James Suckling
95 points - James Suckling
Ca’Marcanda is Gaja’s estate in Bolgheri, created in 1996 and propelled by Angelo Gaja’s ambition to challenge himself with Bordeaux in this unique terroir. Located in the so-called Bolgheri amphitheater, it's in a very good area: it's neighbours include Guado al Tasso, Ornellaia and Sassicaia!
Magari is one of three red wines produced at the estate, and is comprised of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. The three varieties ferment and macerate separately for around 15 days. After 12 months of aging in oak, they are blended and then aged some additional time in bottle.
The nose is remarkably intense, immediately presenting saline notes, flower bulbs, fresh wood logs, oregano and other aromatic herbs. The floral aspect dominates over the fruit, with a mature, almost wilted flower character. The wine is dense, exhibiting substance and juiciness. In the aftertaste, the fruit melds with sweet notes of chocolate. The wine boasts a very good structure with prominent notes of rose and violet. A distinctive salty marine note adds to its complexity. This is a wine to pair with classic Bordelais foods such as duck confit, grilled and roast meats, and wild game.
